The port of this game is not great, my recent playthrough was all smooth sailing (apart from a deadzone issues with my Xbox360's left analogstick) but other reviews note major issues. Would I recommend this? Certainly, just be aware that some points of the game spike in difficulty due to the combat, but it's not bad enough to really diminish the experience too much.īefore we talk about the game lets get technical. It all adds up to a decent length, well paced adventure. And years on I think it still looks pretty good, textures and world design all hold up, as does the sound design. The other core element, the platforming / parkour generally makes up for it, the game is fairly linear but it doesn't need any overly complex puzzles and what not to be compelling. The combat, it floats between fun and frustrating based on those factors. When it doesn't happen enemies can and will attack you during the animation while you are defenseless, and to make matters worse the dagger stab itself just seems finicky, sometimes it will target other enemies instead of the downed one causing you to miss your opportunity. When it works it works well, it adds a real flow to the combat and a player agency, but at it's worst it is fairly terrible, the dagger stab has no invincibility to it, the best you can hope for is that it triggers a camera zoom which appears to stop enemies attacking but this doesn't happen every time. The worst part of the combat is that killing an enemy doesn't mean they're dead, you must incapacitate them first by attacking them until they fall down, after which you have a limited amount of time to stab them with your dagger to kill them permanently. The biggest problem here is that Farah can draw attention from enemies herself and is annoyingly fragile, her bow attack can stun enemies to prolong her life but most of the time if she draws attention to herself you will need to pray that you can reach and save her in time because if she falls you game over regardless of your own health, and as previously mentioned because of camera movement and getting surrounded by enemies doing so may be an almost impossible task.Ĭombat itself generally has no real strategy to it, if it's possible to do the jump slash over an opponent it's a matter of repeating that until they are dead, it just gets a bit more finicky when you deal with enemies that prevent that. All this is made worse in the few situations where Farah the princess who accompanies the prince on his journey, is also engaged in combat, she will fire at enemies with her bow and it is very possible and often extremely problematic that she can hit you with a stray arrow causing you to drop your guard and opening you to attack from one or several enemies. This becomes even more of a problem if you encounter enemies who can hit through your blocking stance, the way the camera moves means what your inputs will result in can be a real gamble, so the need to backflip away from your opponent me see you roll around your opponent and getting hit. The one thing I remember being sort of weak was the combat but upon replaying it I realise that the combat is generally not the problem, it's everything surrounding it that makes it a bit of a pain, most notably the obnoxious way enemies continue to spawn in feeling almost infinite at times combined with a terrible camera that has a real knack of getting stuck on walls or otherwise providing you with the worst view possible means assessing and reacting in combat is a real problem. From what I remembered I enjoyed this game, and having replayed it now I know I enjoyed this game. This review is based on my first replay of the game which comes approximately 7 or so years after my first playthrough. But then again, it was a product of its time and I can't knock it too much because the technology just wasn't there yet.īut other than that, the game was a great experience and I enjoyed most of my time with it :) The camera is the reason why I didn't love this game. This made the whole final area take way longer than it should have. It also makes platforming much harder because it decides to zoom out really far all the time. What is with Gamecube/ps2/xbox era games and shitty cameras? It makes combat so much harder than it actually is because it decides to zoom in and zoom out at will. The game looked great for its time and the soundtrack was sweet too.Īll that being said, the main problem with this game is the camera. I really liked how they both grew as characters mainly because of each other. I enjoyed the story, especially the ending, and I really liked Farah and the Prince. The platforming is solid, the combat is fun, yet challenging, the puzzles progressively get harder and creative as the game goes on, and the rewinding time mechanic is pretty cool. Great game! First time playing it now, 16 years after it came out, and I had fun for the most part.
